Two years ago (and change) I compiled a list of the Top 11 Albums of 2011. Last year I put together the Top 12 Albums of 2012. Both articles were compiled of selections culled from lists of approximately 40 albums respectively. After not publishing an article in six months I decided that those once dedicated SHH readers deserved something much more comprehensive for 2013. Instead of publishing a predictably titled Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 13 Albums of 2013 three weeks into January of 2014 I would, as I am wont to do, aim way too high and likely disappoint myself–a Top 50!
In June of last year I wrote what I thought was an exhaustive review of 20 albums that were in my possession from the first quarter of 2013; five of the aforementioned 20 can be found on this list. 2013, plainly put, was a freakishly amazing year in music–surprise releases from long dormant champions, a flux of new artists cutting their teeth quickly and a slew of acts adding yet another merit badge to their sashes.
After a month or so of toiling away in my bedroom I compiled a list of nearly 200 albums (yes, 200) that had a shot at making the Top 50. Thankfully, I recognized the breadth of a one-man Top 50; luckily, I was able to enlist a man with a frighteningly broad knowledge of music, particularly 2000 and on, who puts me to shame: King DD.
Disclaimer/Kudos: The title does indeed read “The Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 50 Albums of 2013,” but let it be known that it is strictly for branding purposes. This Top 50 list is just as much King DD’s as it is mine.
Albums were rated, albums were cut, dark horses emerged and, like every list, mistakes were made (some of which related to this project). At the end of this sapping process we had a list of 100 albums rated, 50 of which made the grade. Below please find the Top 50 Albums of 2013…
